EU Renewable Energy Regulation

Updated: July 2023

Renewable Energy Regulation:
COUNCIL REGULATION (EU) 2022/2577 of 22 December 2022 laying down a framework to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy

In December 2022, the Council adopted an emergency regulation to facilitate and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the skyrocketing energy prices that it entailed.

This regulation serves to fill the legislative gap for the implementation of renewable energy solutions while the 2021 proposal to revise the Renewable Energy Directive is being negotiated.

The regulation establishes temporary rules for the granting of permits for producing energy from renewable energy sources, with a particular focus on technologies that can contribute to a short-term acceleration of the deployment of renewable energy solutions across the EU.
