EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation

Update: July 2023

Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation:
Directive 2009/125/EC

On 30 March 2022, the Commission published a proposal for a new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation to replace the Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC and improve the circularity, energy performance and sustainability performance of almost all categories of products placed on the EU market. Thus, the regulation will establish requirements for, among other things,
• product durability, reusability, upgradability, and reparability,
• presence of substances that inhibit circularity,
• energy and resource efficiency,
• recycled content,
• remanufacturing and recycling,
• carbon and environmental footprints,
• information requirements, including a Digital Product Passport.

As a result of this regulation, the primary energy savings could amount to 132 mtoe/150 billion cubic meters of natural gas by 2030, which is almost equivalent to the EU’s import of Russian gas.
