EU Internal Electricity Market Directive

Updated: July 2023

Internal Electricity Market Directive:
Regulation (EU) 2019/943, Directive (EU) 2019/944 on common rules for the internal market for electricity and amending Directive 2012/27/EU (recast)

On the 5th of June 2019, in parallel with Regulation (EU) 2019/943, Directive (EU) 2019/944 on common rules for the internal market for electricity and amending Directive 2012/27/EU (recast) was adopted.

Whereas Regulation (EU) 2019/943 lays down the key principles of the new market design for electricity and sets out new rules regarding capacity mechanisms and cooperation between operators of transmission systems, the Directive establishes common rules for the generation, transmission, distribution, energy storage and supply of electricity as well as measures for the protection of consumers and the flexibility, fairness and transparency of the EU’s electricity markets.
