Wind Farms at the Seaside - Sines

Short description: In 1991 was built a wind farm facing the sea in a seven hectare situated 3 km from the sea at the town of Sinesthe. The park consists of 12 wind turbines, distributed in three groups of four. Each turbine is 150 kW and the annual output of the wind farm is around 2.5 million kWh, equal to the energy consumption of the town of Sines (not counting industrial consumption).
Total project cost: 280,000 EUR
EU contribution: 190,000 EUR

Hydropower Projects:

Madeira Develops Hydropower for Use All Year Round

Short description: The Madeira´s hydroelectric station has been transformed into a reversible system which allows water and energy production all year round regardless rainfall, thus allowing the growth of the tourism sector.
Time period: 2004 - 2007
EU contribution: 17,300,000 EUR

Making the Sea Our Servant, Not Our Master

Short description: The project focused in the construction and maintenance of a wave power station in Pico Island, a region with high advantages for wave power, resulting in the most important asset of this kind in Europe
Time period: 1992-1999 and 2005-2007
EU contribution: 2,000,000 EUR

Geothermal Projects:

The Soft Energy of Volcanoes

Short description: Two geothermal power plants were build and one was rebuilt in Madeira, reducing the energy dependence of the island, which will have an expected production of 38% of the electricity supplies in 2007 coming from geothermal power.

EU contribution: 9,808,432 EUR
