REVISED EMISSIONS TRADING SYSTEM DIRECTIVE

Updated: July 2023

In 2021, the European Commission launched a proposal to amend the Directive 2003/87/EC establishing a system for greenhouse gas emission allowance trading within the Union and Decision (EU) 2015/1814 concerning the establishment and operation of a market stability reserve for the Union greenhouse gas emission trading system.

Directive (EU) 2023/959 was adopted on the 10th of May 2023 and serves to facilitate the EU's overall transition towards a carbon neutral region by 2050, as well as the 2030 targets set forth in the Fit for 55 legislative package.

You can read more about the emissions trading system directive and its effects here.

See also the European Commission's website for further details about the revision of the Directive.
